Yahtzee Scoring Rules: All 13 Categories
A Yahtzee sheet has thirteen boxes and you must fill every one, even if it means writing a zero. Knowing what each box pays — and which ones are traps — is most of the game.
The upper section
Ones through sixes: you score the sum of the matching dice only. Three fours scores 12, not 4. Reach 63 points across the six boxes and you earn a 35-point bonus — 63 is exactly three of each number, so every box where you take only two of a kind puts the bonus at risk.

The bonus arithmetic that decides most games
Track the upper section as a running balance against 63. Three of a number is "par" — it contributes exactly its share. Four sixes puts you +6 ahead; two fives puts you −5 behind. Players who lose the 35-point bonus by three or four points almost always lost it in the ones and twos, where a shortfall feels harmless.
Which box to sacrifice
- Ones — a zero there costs at most 5 points of raw score.
- Yahtzee — worth 50, but chasing it late usually costs more than it returns.
- Never sacrifice Chance early: it is the safety net for a bad final roll.

Yes — 2-3-4-5-6 contains 2-3-4-5, so a large straight can be entered as a small straight for 30 if the 40-point box is already used.
Under the standard rules a second Yahtzee earns a 100-point bonus, provided the first was scored as 50 and not zeroed. Many house rules drop this — agree before you start.
