Volleyball Scoring: Sets and Rally Points
Volleyball switched to rally scoring in 1999: every rally now produces a point, whichever side served. Before that, only the serving team could score, and matches ran unpredictably long.
Set structure

Winning the match
Best of five sets — the first team to three. A match can therefore finish 3–0, 3–1 or 3–2, and only the 3–2 uses the shorter fifth set.
The two-point margin
There is no ceiling. At 24–24 play continues until one side leads by two, so sets ending 29–27 or higher are common at elite level.
Frequently asked questions
The team that won the rally. If they were not serving, they rotate one position clockwise before serving.
The libero cannot attack the ball above net height or serve in most regulations, so in practice they do not score — their role is reception and defence.
